The Sunriver Police Department Reserve program provides supplemental personnel for routine police department activities, broadens the capabilities of the department to handle unusual events and emergencies, enhances public service, and garners citizen support and understanding of the police function through citizen involvement. A Reserve Police Officer may be someone who is interested in pursuing a law enforcement career or someone who may work in another career, but still would like to be active in the law enforcement community. Often unknown to observers when in uniform, Reserve Officers are donating their time to the Police Department.

Reserve officers attend a 10 month Central Oregon Reserve Academy to meet state and Sunriver Police Department standards. The Central Oregon Reserve Academy includes classroom and skills training in a wide variety of topics including:

  • Municipal and State Law;
  • Criminal Procedures;
  • Investigations;
  • Certification in CPR, defensive tactics, hazardous materials, vehicle operations, report writing, evidence collections and crime scene processing techniques, etc…,and;
  • Extensive firearms training to include qualifications with handgun, shotgun, and rifle.

After graduation from the Central Oregon Reserve Academy, new reserve officers are assigned to a reserve advisor and are required to attend monthly meetings and training sessions.

Reserve officers also assist regular department personnel in the completion of their duties. Reserve officers ride with regular, full-time, police officers to provide additional assistance and to learn more about the duties and responsibilities of a Sunriver Police Officer. Reserve officers also provide an increased law enforcement presence at special events and other community activities.
